Continuing Professional Development

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Maintaining an effective CPD record demonstrates a commitment to staying current with essential knowledge and skills, ensuring you are equipped to serve society to the highest standards.

What is CPD?

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) encompasses the diverse methods used to keep skills and knowledge up-to-date throughout your career. CPD supports growth at every stage—whether you are new to the field, considering a sector change, or have extensive experience.

Maintaining Your CPD Record

As an ICPEM member, you will receive guidance on how to plan, record, and reflect on your CPD, with advice on how best to meet the Institute’s standards. We encourage members to actively engage in CPD activities aligned with their unique goals and learning styles, without rigid prescriptions.

CPD Activities

ICPEM offers flexibility in CPD activities, enabling members to choose options that align with their career goals and interests. Activities may include:

- Work-based learning
- Self-directed learning: e.g., researching papers, attending conferences, and listening to industry podcasts.
- Formal education: including degrees, professional courses, and accredited certifications.
- Voluntary contributions: such as mentoring, participating in a Special Interest Group (SIG), or serving as an ICPEM ambassador.
Teaching and knowledge-sharing: through lecturing, tutoring, or offering courses.

ICPEM recommends that members holding Member, Fellow, or Senior Fellow status complete a minimum of 25 hours of CPD annually.

Tracking Your CPD Progress

Maintaining a CPD record helps members track their learning journey, set goals, and reflect on their growth. ICPEM Learn provides an accessible platform for members to find, undertake, and document CPD activities throughout the year.

CPD Accreditation and Points

ICPEM awards CPD points for various activities to support members’ ongoing professional growth. CPD points are available for ICPEM-accredited training and events. For more information on CPD accreditation, please contact us.

Apprenticeships

Bringing fresh talent into the resilience and emergency management sector is crucial as the world faces increasingly complex risks. Apprenticeships play a key role in this, offering an accessible pathway for individuals to enter the industry, gain practical experience, and build essential skills. Programmes like the Resilience and Emergencies Professional Degree Apprenticeship (REP), provide a structured route that combines learning with real-world application. By engaging new professionals through apprenticeships, we cultivate a workforce prepared to meet current and emerging challenges, fostering a sustainable and skilled industry for the future.
